People often mistake comfort for a good fit! For example, as reported in BBC Newsbeat an UGG-style imitation boot feels warm and cosy but doesn't offer any support, and could damage your feet.

Most budget footwear uppers are either synthetic or cheap leather. Linings are almost always synthetic and the insoles are cardboard. The result is that the feet do not breath and any sweat is held on the foot. The insole will eventually break up due to the excess moisture and offer very poor comfort. Insoles are either wafer thin leather or synthetic with a small foam pad offering no support and again creating a sweat area. It also amazes me why some manufactures do not make shoes fit correctly, as there are standard measurements that they should adhere to.

An ideal situation is where the sole, insole, insock, lining and upper are all leather, this creates the ultimate breathing situation for the feet and allows sweat to pass through, thus keeping the feet dry. An anti-bacterial insock, like I use in my winklepicker shoes, offer extra heel and arch support and is a very good addition. Heels should have a good quality support so that the back of the heel is held firmly. Remember your whole body is supported on a very small area and without the correct footwear will undoubtedly lead to problems in latter life!

I have been in the footwear industry for over 30 years designing and responsible for manufacturing medium to high quality footwear. With my Rider label, I used Italian artisen factories which are known for creating style and quality. I have never been interested in cutting corners, as this reduces quality. But unfortunately, some retailers are importing cheap, poor quality footwear without fully understanding the longer term damage it could do to your feet.

We took part in the Beatle fest in Liverpool. A busy weekend, and the reaction to our winklepickers was very positive and sales were very encouraging.
